EPILEPSY: A QUESTION OF ETHICS

It has been said that the concept of ethics is axiomatic and self-evident. This could not be further from the truth because each individual’s perception of ethics is determined by that individual’s perseptive of life. Just as each person is an individual, so are his or her perspectives of real life unique. It follows that to do justice to the appreciation of ethics, as a scholarly discipline, it is inherent to canvass as wide ranging a set of perspectives as a possible to prepare the collage that represent a proper overview.

This book, the fourth in the series edited by Dr. G. Beran, dealing eith Epilepsy, analyses the ethics that relate to epilepsy from comprehensive paradigm. The contributors were selected from as borad a range of involved personnel as could be found within the Australian context, which was the parochial focus of the study group.

EPILEPSY: DUTY OF CARE

With litigation on the rise it is important to determine what are the parameters of duty of care by which standards are set.

The overviews ehich are contained within this publication have allowed extensive review of the subject matter and should offer clinicians in all areas of epilepsy care a reference upon which to judge their own responsibilities.

The issues that emerge from these discussions fo well beyond just the treatment of epilepsy and provide review of the issues that relate to overall patient care.

As in all areas of legal review there are no absolutes by which clinicians can feel confident that they have unequivocally met their obligations but material contained within this book has highlighted areas of concern. It has revwed various arguments and judgements and provided the reason for them. It is hoped that with beter understanding of these issiues, both carers and patients may be offered better provision for optimal care.

SELF-EVOLUTION: ETHICS OF REDESIGNING EDEN

Should we self-evolve? Should we eradicate genetic disease from the germline?

This book covers the most relevant dilemmas of today s medical ethics from the perspective of new advances in biotechnology. The book explores the science, politics, social consequences and ethics of both recent and future attempts by human beings both individually and collectively to take evolution into their own hands. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book brings diffuse elements of the theory and practice of self-evolution together so that we may see how we have come to face the reality of self-evolution and also what self evolution is likely to amount to in the future.
